Hécula

This wine was a huge surprise, it was a last minute grab while trying to fill a mixed case purchase to insure my discount and man did I get lucky. After doing a little research it appears that the wine is made in an unusual process.

Half tank and half barrel fermented 100% Monastrell that underwent both traditional and carbonic fermentation. The cuvee is then blended non-filtered. What does all this mean? Quality results are achieved through non-traditional winemaking methods resulting in an appealing style pioneered by a very talented winemaker. In the past a lot of Mourvedre/Monastrell that I have tasted came off as very singular in it’s flavor dimensions this one has many facets all very appealing.

It is a very rich full-bodied hulking monster of a wine. The aromas reminded me of a slightly wet dusty road smell with mocha overtones. The thick and chewy texture is plush but rustic. Flavors of blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream and chocolate mixed with eucalyptus. Interesting and built to be still in good shape for a few years to come this wine provides pleasure for the adventuresome enophile that will take a chance.

The culinary compatibility prospects are huge, what I mean is pair it with huge flavors of smoked meats, wine braised roasts of beef or fowl and strong cheeses. Pizza and pastas will fare well also. Get some while it is still around.~Marc Hinton
