Ridge Carignane

Carignane is usually better suited as a blending grape, but the '07 Ridge "Buchignani Ranch" is a great example of how this grape can stand on its own. It's an attractive wine with a nice yin and yang going on between its soft, feminine side and its dusty, masculine side.

It starts out with a soft entry of raspberries and violets. Now before you

get all weird on me and call me out on the "violet" reference, hear me out because I'm not making up some funky descriptor to make your head spin. Have you ever tasted an edible flower before? They have this sweet, almost nectar like quality and they smell sweet and floral with an almost woody characteristic.

On its masculine side, this wine is dusty and earthy. Combine the yin and yang and you'll taste something in the sorts of eating a Molten lava cake oozing with bittersweet chocolate while smoking a Partagás Serie Cuban cigar.

I recommend decanting this wine for at least an hour before consuming. It's drinkable shortly after opening, but the flavors really open up after a significant amount of breathing time. Drink now or hold through 2011. 1,225 case production ~Pamela Heiligenthal
